  • Legitimate Pay

    The song sung:

The courtroom was full and the facts were clear
    Heinous crimes and horrible deeds
But the counsel for defense turned it upside down
    with lies, manipulation and sleaze
    O what a performance! O what a show!
till no laws were left to obey
He did it for legitimate pay, O Lord
He did it for legitimate pay

    2.

When Jesus arrived with courageous love
the leaders of the masses looked grim
With righteous civic pride they unveiled their plan
to decorate a cross with him
The peace–keeping forces from glorious Rome
stood guard at that bloody display
They did it for legitimate pay, Oh Lord
They did it for legitimate pay

    < – – – >

Verses 3 and 4, which are not included on the audio version, appear at the bottom of this post.

    5.

We dreamed as a child –– foolish, childish dreams ––
of what we would make of our lives
But who has the courage and poise to see
    when the critical moment arrives?
This job with its paychecks makes it easier
to ignore what is slipping away
To ignore it for legitimate pay, Oh Lord
We do it for legitimate pay

    < – – – >

Additional verses not included in the audio:

    3.

The train puffed and whistled with national pride
happy for a cargo to pull
The soldiers herded all the Jewish children in
until the cattle cars were full
Another day, another dollar, one more job well done,
they wished each other, “Have a nice day”
They did it for legitimate pay, Oh Lord
They did it for legitimate pay

    4.

The ground started shaking, the world caught fire
Thousands were lost in the plague
Then down from the hills savage warriors came
to destroy what could not be enslaved
But I was at the office, and so were you
with lots to keep us busy that day
to earn our legitimate pay, Oh Lord
    To earn our legitimate pay

  • Proverbs 16:1

  • Evolved?

    Definition:
Evolve (verb): to develop gradually to a higher or more advanced state.

That is an accepted standard conventional definition of the word “evolve,” from which the noun “evolution” is derived.

    Definition:
Evolution (noun): the gradual development to a higher or more advanced state.

Now, if one believes in evolution, then one believes that humanity is a product of such a gradual process. That is, in the very distant past, there was some kind of primordial soup of unaccounted-for origin that contained within it some kind of entity that was the only “living” thing that had ever existed. (We leave behind for the present discussion the issue of how any entity at that juncture can be described as “living.”)

Then that one-celled “living” thing evolved – developing gradually, over immeasurable time, by some seemingly feasible process, to the higher, more advanced state which we now think of as The Human Race.

    Question:
By what standard do we humans now count our current state of development to be an improvement or “advancement” beyond that one-celled “living” thing that supposedly started out in the primordial soup? One might say it is obvious that any human being in the current epoch is clearly superior in every recognizable way to a mere primordial cell.

    But…

    Really?

By what rational standard is such an evaluation to be made? A “religious” one, the credibility of which we have already dismissed? A “scientific” one, based on supposedly objective data that has been gathered and evaluated by the very subjective mind that was formed by the process it is examining?
Using only tested, confirmed, objective criteria, can you prove beyond objective reasonable doubt that contemporary human cultures are more sophisticated, practical, or valuable than a convocation of “living” cells in a petri dish?

If you cannot do so, then you do not believe in evolution in its conventional sense. Rather, at a minimum, you believe in what is called “intelligent design,” a term typically used by those who want to retain credibility in both scientific and Christian settings. You believe, however feebly, in some sort of Will or Personality behind the whole thing.

How can I say with confidence that you do not believe in evolution in its conventional sense? Here’s how:

    • You make an assumption, unproven by scientific methods, that contemporary human cultures are more sophisticated, practical, and valuable than a culture of “living” cells moving around in a petri dish.

    • You make this assumption based only on comparisons of value that seem obvious to you, but which cannot be objectively demonstrated except to those who share your unproven subjective unscientific assumptions. Comparisons of inherent moral or ontological value are not within the purview of the scientific method.

    • Outside of a biblical (or perhaps to a lesser degree, another (“religious”) viewpoint, compelling scientific arguments cannot be made in support of a proposition that a culture of “living” cells moving around in a petri dish is inferior in various ways to conventional human cultures. Science cannot prove the relative value of two entities using only the scientific method. Thus science demands reconsideration of biological evolve-olution.

  • Four Aphorisms beginning with “If…”

If I strongly desire to think or do or be something, I will automatically, unconsciously, and with increasing seeming sophistication over time, make that thing wise and virtuous. If I dislike someone for whatever reason, I will in the same ways, make something annoying about them: foolish, inappropriate, and/or nefarious. This is why God had to take issues of wisdom and morality out of our hands and replace them with the possibility of devotion to a Person, namely, His Son.

    < – – – >

If it wasn’t for family, we would all have seemingly significant relationships only with the people we choose out of mutual comfort.

    < – – – >

If my love is mere feeling, impulse, or sentiment, then at the most critical moments of my soul’s life, my love will be trumped by my defensiveness.

    < – – – >

If nature teaches anything, it teaches that God prefers diversity over equity.

  • For Those Who Hate/Think

Should not there be source of
...Opinion, for those who hate other people's opinions
...Christianity for those who hate "Christianity"
...Poetry for those who hate "Poetry"
...Philosophy for those who hate "Philosophy"
    ...Humanity for those who sense
that simply learning to "love myself"
can be a fatally simplistic outlook

Jesus said that the two greatest commandments are
to "love the Lord your God
    with all your heart
    with all your soul
    with all your strength
    and with all your mind
    -and-
to live your neighbor as yourself."

It is now far too common to hear folks
    - even Christianish preachers -
    turn those "two greatest commandments"
    into three greatest commandments,
and then, of course, list hers own addition
to the top of the list, as in:

"First you have to learn to love yourself."

    If you hear that, RUN.
And if you hear it from a Christianish pastor,
RUN HARD, FAST, AND FAR AWAY, in terror.

And then make sure to keep asking God to help you understand
how ALL PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES,
(especially those who can't escape the pathetic hellish bondage of
"I need to learn to love myself")
already love themselves in the ways Jesus intended here.

Two examples (this is just to get the door slightly ajar):

    1. You routinely seek to improve your experience of life: to have food, money and other resources, to protect yourself from various dangers, to rest when weary, to gain comforts and pleasures, to hang out with people who affirm you, and on and on.

    2. If someone speaks harshly to you or about you, your first and deepest response is to find a way to defend yourself.

Start out by seeking to love God and those in your sphere of influence in similar ways. That's not a bad beginning.

    More to come.

  • An Invitation to Mercy

This text made musical for easier memorization:

In Western civilization in the 21st century,
    there is a significant degree
    of shallowness, foolishness, deception, denial,
among both the religious and the irreligious.

    I recommend that you reconsider
    the foundations upon which
    your own life is built.
    Do some courageous investigating
    beneath your surface rhetoric.

Be certain that you are ready at any time
for a just God to give you your final examination
based on The One Man in history
that rose up out of His own grave
and is waiting now for you to seek Him.
  • The Gospel in 100 Words

This text made musical for easier memorization:
    At least for now,
the one true God is not intruding
    on our freedom
To choose our own strategies for life,
nor on our freedom to choose…
    to choose relationships that will
    validate our choices,
    but there is only one
Person in history that a mob,
    certain of its rightness,
    murdered for His remarkable
    wisdom, power, and kindness...
Who was really dead and was really buried,
then literally was raised up again
    to be profoundly alive
    then, now, and forever.
    The only true God
    will finally evaluate all humanity-
    ALL humanity-
based on what we do or refuse to do
    with that Person
based on what we do or refuse to do
    with Jesus Christ.
  • Temporary Man

Man-whose entrance is a womanly thing-
has a short and troubled existence.
He starts out like a precious frail flower and soon enough will wither like a flower.
He watches his life like watching his shadow as the sun sets behind him.

Through it all, God gazes at him and makes him think:
contrive meanings, chase relevance, assume justifications.
Who can take the refuse and turn it into perfumed delights? Nobody!
And it is all set down in the shallow artifice of space, the narrative fiction of time,

the beating of time, time out, out of time, end time.
His life is bounded by walls, guarded with vehemence.
He will not escape the custodianship of finiteness.
So why not keep a little distance for a while?

Give him and yourself a break.
    Let him relax a bit.
Give him some time to recount his wealth, even gathered in a shopping cart,
    and anticipate his fire-ing.
